Maternity is priceless, of course, but since raising children comes with no formal salary for the parents, the cost is enormous, especially to the mother. This cost that Ling-Yin speaks of is the cost of their own professional lives and often respect and responsibility within the workplace. This is where women struggle between a professionally unfulfilling life of staying at home with children and an equally unfulfilling life without children but a blossoming career. This is an unfair choice to expect women to make but can be rectified with men stepping up to the task of assisting in raising the children and supporting their wives to pursue their careers. The burden women carry for being the main caretaker of children is one that holds†¦show more content†¦All the previously stated facts, the history of women at work, and the current climate for women in the workplace lead up to the idea that change lies in how society raises their sons. Gender equality is only possible if both men and women internalize these ideas. It is important to instill in young boys the importance of being a nurturer, the idea that they can do whatever profession they desire. Whatever profession they desire includes traditionally â€Å"feminine† jobs as well as responsibilities within the home. Male presence in these â€Å"feminine† industries raises the wages and helps to remove the stigma of lower level work. This also opens the more â€Å"masculine† professions to women and aids in a role reversal within the home. If women can hold the breadwinning occupations in a family, it frees them to take more time dedicated to work and less time preparing dinner and doing laundry. It is important to give both genders the opportunity to pursue the fields they are passionate about, regardless of the stigmas associated with them. Perhaps if society raises young boys to be compassionate and show their emotions easily and without judgment, their roles as fathers can become more pronounced within the family unit.
